Let's paint: Star Trek pt 1

I joined in on a Star Trek fan project, bringing together extremely talented artists to make a book honoring the 35th anniversary of TNG. I chose to do “The Dancing doctor” it's based off the episode “Data's Day” with Dr.Crusher teaching Data how to dance. It consists of four poses, and wording down below. Poses are based off tv screen grabs from the show. This is a rough sketch. I originally was going to illustrate this with markers, but opted for paint instead.

Reusing an old canvas, I blocked out the location of the poses.

This is my inspiration for a color pallette. I'm adding other colors as I see fit, I rarely stick to any predetermined set of colors. It feels too inhibiting.

Still blocking out colors, and jumping ahead with laying out the locations of the green palm plants. I know I'll be painting over them and redoing the leaves at the end of the painting. It's just that I love to paint plants and I get excited to get started on them. Dr.Crusher has some features. Her hair needs taming.

Ok so we have our first big issue. The composition is alright, but I need to move the top left image up higher to achieve a better focal view of the whole poster. It's vaguely a “z” shape with a image at each point. This is the first thing I'm addressing with the painting, before I go further.

My last update for this session. I've readjusted their heights, started working in richer tones, rounding out the columns and eye balling the colors/planning my next moves. I will add “The dancing doctor” digitally afterwards. I won't bother painting the words on an already crammed canvas. The window detailing is fun, the architecture and palette is very 90’s. I'm having flashbacks.

Just wanted to share my lovely flowers from my son 💜. I love them.so much. He had his first sleepover (stayed with his cousin) and he missed me, and brought me back some flowers.
